Nurturing Passion and Artistry

Arimee in the Big Apple

Arimee in the Big Apple

Hi, my name is Arimee Gambill and I’m a student at the Reif Dance. I have dedicated the past five summers to dancing at summer intensive programs. Past ones I’ve attended include Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, The San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, and of course, the Reif!

I am currently at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s six week program in New York City. I auditioned back in February and was accepted into the Professional Division. I am staying at Fordham University, which is right in the middle of Manhattan’s theater district and only a 10 minute walk from Ailey. This is the longest intensive I’ve attended and by far the best one. It has been such a challenging and intense program, but also so nurturing. All of my teachers have been so passionate about dance. They really pushed me, as well as my peers, to our limits while still making the classes fun. I have also managed to remain injury free (knock on wood!) The classes have made me so strong. My schedule includes ballet, Horton and Graham modern techniques, hip hop, and gyrokinesis. The building is absolutely stunning, with huge beautiful studios overlooking NYC. We also get to perform at the end of the program!

I have been granted a lot of independence that most 17 year-olds wouldn’t have. I grocery shopped, cooked, and was able to freely go wherever I wanted to, as long as I was back by curfew. (I may or may not have cut it close a few times). I have fallen in love with New York. In my free time, you could find me exploring the city, taking open dance classes, attempting to cook, or hanging out with my awesome roommates. Highlights so far have been a Yankees Game, Six Flags amusement park, American Ballet Theatre performance, learning choreography from the Broadway musical ‘Hamilton,’ $1 slice pizza, and Rockaway Beach. Also getting lost plenty of times and taking the wrong subway (LOL!). I am excited to be back in my own bed, have much better working wifi, and to be back at Reif, but I am going to really miss this incredible program and city.
